What is an Average Down Calculator?

An average down calculator helps stock investors calculate their new average cost per share when they buy more of the same stock at a lower price. When a stock you own falls below your purchase price, buying more shares reduces your average cost — a strategy called averaging down.

For example, if you bought 100 shares of Reliance Industries at ₹2,800 and the price drops to ₹2,400, buying another 100 shares lowers your average cost to ₹2,600. This means the stock needs to recover less for you to break even.

Average Down Calculator Formula

The average down formula is straightforward:

New Average Price = Total Amount Invested ÷ Total Shares Owned

Total Amount Invested = (Buy 1 Price × Buy 1 Shares) + (Buy 2 Price × Buy 2 Shares) + ...

Example (NSE India): You bought 50 shares of HDFC Bank at ₹1,600 and then 50 more at ₹1,400.

Total invested = (50 × ₹1,600) + (50 × ₹1,400) = ₹80,000 + ₹70,000 = ₹1,50,000

Total shares = 50 + 50 = 100

New average price = ₹1,50,000 ÷ 100 = ₹1,500 per share

Avg reduction = ₹1,600 − ₹1,500 = ₹100 per share saved

How do I calculate average stock price for NSE/BSE stocks?

Is averaging down a good strategy for Indian stocks?

It depends on the stock and your conviction. For fundamentally strong large-cap stocks like Reliance, TCS, or HDFC Bank during broad market corrections, averaging down has historically worked well. However, averaging down on small-caps or stocks with deteriorating fundamentals can increase losses significantly.

How many times can I average down?

Our calculator supports up to 10 separate buy transactions. In practice, most investors limit averaging down to 2–3 times to avoid over-concentration in a single position.
