P&L Formula for Stock Trades

Net Profit = (Sell Price − Buy Price) × Shares − Total Brokerage Fees
ROI % = (Net Profit ÷ Total Buy Value) × 100
Break-even Price = Buy Price × (1 + Brokerage Fee %)

Example: You bought 200 shares of Infosys at ₹1,450 and sold at ₹1,600 with 0.05% brokerage. Your gross profit is ₹30,000 but after fees of ₹310, your net profit is ₹29,690 — an ROI of 10.24%.

Short-Term vs Long-Term Stock Returns

How do I calculate profit on NSE/BSE stocks?

Enter your buy price, sell price, number of shares, and brokerage fee percentage. The calculator shows your net profit after fees, ROI, and break-even price. For Indian stocks, use 0.03–0.05% for discount brokers like Zerodha or Groww.

What is a good ROI for Indian stocks?

The Nifty 50 has returned approximately 12–14% CAGR over the last 10 years. Any single trade returning above 15–20% annualised is considered strong. Short-term trades vary widely depending on market conditions.

Does this include capital gains tax for India?

Currently the calculator accounts for brokerage fees only. For Indian tax purposes: STCG (Short Term Capital Gains, held <1 year) is taxed at 20%, and LTCG (Long Term Capital Gains, held >1 year) above ₹1.25 lakh is taxed at 12.5%. Always verify with your CA or tax advisor.
